The plot in Derveni is located inside a natural basin in high altitude, surrounded by spectacular rising rock formations. The landscape breeds the desire for inhabitation with 360 degree views. To avoid visual obstacles, three courtyards are cut into the earth containing water, vegetation and shade. The excavation reveals the elevations of inhabitable areas where sleeping areas of the house are located. Completely underground, their volume is invisible from any point in the landscape. The shaded courtyard, covered by a large roof which houses the communal spaces, is the only prominent element outdoors. The roof rim follows the jagged outline of the surrounding mountains, which was carefully surveyed by a topographer, and generates a complex shape, a new landscape echoing the existing one. The roof consists of a skeleton of steel beams, similar to boat construction, visible from the inside, with insulation and final cladding on top.
