Nest Container Cave is an extension to a suburban house in Politia.
The extension, already a vertical surreal collage of three different elements, is collaged in turn onto the existing. Each element is located on a different level and stimulates its own sensual experience, using different materials and construction methods, while providing a tight yet efficient environment for the inhabitants.
Nest
The nest is a single (master) bedroom perched on the container and the existing tree right in front. It is constructed of wooden panels or boards attached on a light metal structure. The two side walls of the nest are transparent, allowing the observation of the uninterrupted view of the urban sprawl of Athens on the front and of the planted veranda in the back. The nest is accessed through a metal staircase which hangs between the existing volume and the extension.
Container
The container is a steel box serving as an efficient storage unit both for equipment and every day activities. The living room, the dining room, the kitchen and a bedroom are organized inside in a linear fashion. The South wall is wide and dense, as it contains a WC, a shower, a wardrobe, a kitchen, a bookcase, a fireplace and archive drawers. The container can be split into two rooms by swinging a mobile wall partition.
Cave
The ground floor level, where the base of the extension is located is seen as a cavernous, intimate environment. Light, space, movement and materiality are the basic ingredients of this sculptural experience. Thresholds and walls merge into one another through a succession of spaces and lighting conditions. The fluidity and mass of exposed concrete provides a strong base for the immediate connection with the garden and the structural support of the container.
